Blizz History
History & Growth of Bedford Blizzard Volleyball Club
The Bedford Blizzard Volleyball Club (Blizz) was founded in January 2006 by Al Scott and Marie Normore with the initial goal of introducing their daughters to club volleyball. The club began with a single team composed entirely of players from Bedford Junior High. Despite challenges such as limited gym time and player availability, the team made an early impact by winning the VNS 15U Provincials consolation championship.
In 2008, the club was renamed Bedford Blizzard Volleyball Club, expanded to two teams (16U and 18U), and began attracting players from outside Bedford. Over the following years, the club continued to grow, adding more teams across various age groups and expanding its competitive presence. By 2010, the club had expanded to four teams, including a highly competitive 14U team, which reached the provincial championship match. This was followed by participation in Volleyball Canada National Championships and an increasing number of elite players.
Major Expansion and Success (2010-2014)
By 2014, the club had grown substantially, offering multiple teams in each age group, including 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U, and 18U. The introduction of the Atomic program for younger players (ages 10-12) in 2013 was another key milestone. The club also began hosting and participating in numerous tournaments, culminating in seven tournaments in 2014 and five teams attending the Volleyball Canada Nationals. Blizz teams continued to perform well at the VNS Championships, including winning gold, silver, and bronze in various age groups.
Continued Growth and National Recognition (2015-2019)
Between 2015 and 2019, the club further expanded its offerings to include a boys program and additional teams in all age groups. The 2015 season saw the addition of a second 15U team and the hosting of eight tournaments, including several VNS Super Series events. Blizz teams consistently performed well at the VNS Provincials, taking home numerous medals in Tier 1 and Tier 2 divisions. In 2019, the club achieved its best performance yet, with gold in the 16U Girls and 14U Boys divisions, as well as additional medals in other age groups. Over the years, many players have been selected for Team NS provincial teams, further solidifying the club’s reputation as a leader in player development.
Adapting to Challenges: the 2020 Season
The 2020 season was a challenging one for the club due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of the VNS Championships and Volleyball Canada Nationals. Despite this setback, the Atomic program continued to thrive, with strong enrollment in both fall and winter sessions. The club also offered various training programs, including specialized Setter training and off-court training in partnership with Phase 2 Performance.
Blizz Today
The 2024 season was one of the most successful in the club's history. At the Nova Scotia Championships, all 17 Blizz teams qualified for and played in the Tier 1 division. The club earned two gold medals: 16U Girls and 18U Boys (won by the 17U Boys team)
In addition, the Blizz won five bronze medals: 14U Girls, 17U Girls, 18U Girls, 14U Boys, and 16U Boys
